Randy Shulman
Upon graduating from New York University film school in 1980, Randy Shulman toiled fruitlessly for several years in the political commercial industry before making a fateful leap over to the field of journalism, where he specialized in film and stage criticism, arts and entertainment features and celebrity interviews. From 1984 to 2008, he served as the principle film critic for the Arundel Newspapers chain in Northern Virginia. Over the years, he was awarded first place in critical writing by the Virginia Press Association six times, and took second place five times. From 1984 to 1997, he served as the theater critic for the Washington Hill Rag, as well as a contributing editor for The InTowner, for which he wrote about food, videos and anything else that dropped into his lap. In the late '80s, he helmed an award-winning, irreverent bi-weekly cable movie review program Whaddaya Want, Entertainment? But his purpose in life arrived in May of 1994, when he co-founded the Washington, D.C.-based GLBT newsmagazine Metro Weekly, where he presently serves as Editor-in-Chief and co-Publisher, and film critic. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, he lives in Washington with his life-partner David and their three cats, Ram, Rom and Spooky.
