About Us
The Washington, DC Area Film Critics Association (WAFCA) was founded in 2002 and is comprised of DC-based film critics from television, radio, print and the internet. As of mid-2008, WAFCA has grown to include 47 members in the DC area.
The group annually recognizes the best in film each December. Since 2002, WAFCA has honored filmmakers such as Denzel Washington, Jack Nicholson, Jamie Foxx, Julieanne Moore, Peter Jackson, Bill Murray, Steven Spielberg, Naomi Watts, Cate Blanchett, and more.
Winners in 2006 included Forest Whitaker for Best Actor, Helen Mirren for Best Actress, and the film "United 93" as Best Film of 2006. In 2007, George Clooney was awarded Best Actor, Julie Christie for Best Actress, and the film "No Country for Old Men" was named Best Film.
Our 2008 winners include surprise indie hit "Slumdog Millionaire" as Best Film and Mickey Rourke took home the belt for Best Actor and Meryl Streep was awarded her first WAFCA award by winning Best Actress.
